Vocab Article

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/14/us/14arizona.html
There is a new law where businesses in Arizona cannot recruit illegal immigrants. The government has usurpted the right for illegal immigrants to get a job. This will make the illegal become atrophied. The government is being scrupulous about their state and is trying to get the immigrants out. I think that it is good for the state to get rid of the illegal immigrants, but I do feel sorry for the people. By divising the illegal immigrants from businesses they will be forced to move out. America is capacious, and businesses need more workers, it can effect economy by forcing them out. Illegal immigrants will never reach a pinnacle like this. Perhaps the government is fabricating this and it never passed. The government is conniving something....

The Waiting Room, Powerful Play

Waiting Room by Aowei Chenqi
We have just finished reading the Waiting Room by Lisa Loomer. It's a play about beauty, and three women in a waiting room. The first is a Chinese(Forgiveness) woman whose feet that are bound, her toe fell off, so she went to the doctor. The second is a Victorian (Victoria) woman with a corset that crushed her ribs. And last is a woman from New Jersey (Wanda) with breast implants (HUGE) and she went to check for cancer. They came from across time to modern day.The key messages from this play are that don't try to please other people so hard. The girls did everything they could to be beautiful to other people. The women all had a big problem of some sort and they still tried to look beautiful for no reason, which they found out.Lisa Loomer puts in her play how trying to look beautiful can lead to so many bad things. The Chinese woman had a toe that fell off. The Victorian woman had Hysteria from bad ovaries. And the final woman from New York had a tumor that was malignant. They lost the most precious things they had.Forgiveness had a husband that liked her feet. When her husband found out about the lost toe he was sad, Forgiveness could not make him happy. But Forgiveness was also sad because her husband had many wives and not just one "Oh Fine.(smiles) little problem with little toe. Fell off this morning."Victoria was a crazy woman. Whenever people said husband her arm would fling out with a tic. When people did something to her that she didn't like she would bite them. Her husband had a hard time controlling her "Sixteen. I got my first corset quite young."Wanda is not married, she lied about her age, and she has changed her breasts 3 times on each side. She is sad because she will have to lose her breasts to a tumor. She was also sad because she had not found someone that would love her. "Three sets. Six tits(laughs)"Ken and Larry were part of the pharmaceutical and scientific part of medicine. They talked about many cures for cancer in the play. Lisa Loomer clearly puts out how the government would only allow treatments that would be safe but also if it would earn good business. In the end Forgiveness wakes up from bed and comes out dancing an ancient Chinese dance. I don't know why Lisa Loomer did that exactly. Perhaps to leave it mysterious so that people could think of their own ending. Or because Chinese dancing would be a great way to represent beauty. If I could change the end of the play, I would want the part where forgiveness was dancing to be a dream. When she starts dancing, the 4 other wives come out and dance too. Than the wife that needs her feet to be bound would be sitting on a chair. Forgiveness would tell her today lucky day by the moon. She smiles and the play ends.

Fairy tales= Bad?

http://www.purdue.edu/UNS/html4ever/031111.Grauerholz.tales.html

The article on top is on fairy tales and how it relates to beauty. When you were little you were probably told of a handsome prince and a sexy princess. And usually the bad guys were ugly. It's a bad influence for little kids. If they see a person that seems ugly they think they are a bad guy, and that's not true at all. Fairy tales from centuries ago, as you see the new movies the bad person is usually made to look ugly and mean. You will find evil people that seem hot sometimes but movies for little kids aren't like that.

The morality of fat.

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9A05EED71F39F933A25750C0A960958260

On top is an article on the morality of fat. People want to be healthy and not overweight, but they either can't control it or they just want to keep eating even though it's bad for their health.
"Today, the amount of fat you eat and the form in which you eat it say more about who you are than the car you drive, the clothes you wear or the neighborhood where you live."

I think that it's weird how everyone thinks skinny people are beautiful but they don't try to achieve it. It's hard for them, I think they feel sad inside because they are afraid of how other people might judge them by the way they look.

These few days we've had 2 Socratic Seminars, I've learned how much people actually care about how they look. I didn't expect it, I've also seen how much I've grown since last year.

Another article on how the media changes what people think.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/3291271.stm

Up there is the article that I read. It talked about how beauty is globalized all across the world. Many places before getting affected by media had different types of beauty.

I don't know how to reply on the article so I'll say this.

I think beauty does not matter on what the person looks like, if you truly fall in love with someone it should be on their personality and not because of how they look on the outside.

Look at this article

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/718359.stm

On top is the article I just read about a country named Mali, that has women that bleach their skin. It damages their skin and inflicts pain to their skin. Maybe it's because they are ebullient to try this, or because they think men find bleached women salacious or that women with bleached skin won't bring a dowry to their marriage. The media is mesmeric, girls that don't embellish their skin are considered second class citizens. In the article they are being salubrious and saying that they shouldn't bleach their skin. I think that too because it can probably cause skin cancer and can make them pallid.

A commercial

That is a video that I watched, it was very powerful for a video that was only 1 minute and twenty seconds long. When I first saw it I didn't know what was happening, then everything started moving. Commercials of what people thought was beauty. My gut feeling? Oh my, those little girls will grow up to be like that? Try that hard to become beautiful no matter what.
The central message of this commercial to me is Beauty on the media and how it would affect future children. In the commercial it showed plastic surgery, cosmetics, make up, and much more. The central idea was to tell parents to talk to their kids about what is beautiful and that they don't need to use anything to be beautiful, as long as they are beautiful inside.

Women in Ancient Greece

At the time of ancient Greece, they were a superior civilization, but they did not treat women as well as men. The difference between women in Athens and Sparta, is that in Athens women were treated as slaves, the highest they could go would be was a prostitute, while in Sparta they had more power, and were trained to learn how to fight.
Ancient Greece treated women very differently from men was because of primitive times in my beliefs. I think that men were born to have more leadership and courage. Also because women hold the baby and breast feed the baby, this may be the very reason because women have a special bond with their child.
I think artists only depicted women in Ancient Greece that were either important, beautiful, or was a goddess.

Socratic seminar

Well today we had a Socratic seminar. We talked about Galileo and Plato's theories and philosophies. It was very interesting, there were many virtues that we thought of and discussed. We tried to think of a universal trait but we could not find one. we discussed about how everything was in the eye of the beholder. There were many good arguements, I wish we had it for a little longer I wanted to discuss more about what I thought.

Some questions I liked to answer

1. What is so beautiful about youth?

When you are young, you still can learn many things, when you grow old you are not capable to do things you could do when you were young. When I was little I could do many things, but now at my age it's harder to learn new things, I don't think I could learn violin like I did when I was little. Or learn a new language as easily. It's much harder to learn Spanish because I just started learning while I learned Mandarin and English when I was very small. Ad another beauty about youth is, you have no wrinkles or bad memory.

2. We know what "perfect" most likely means to Socrates by looking at ancient Greek sculpture and art and drawing inferences, but he doesn't describe this "perfect" human form. What are your thoughts on the idea of a "perfect" human form today? What is it in your culture for men? women? What are your thoughts surrounding those ideals?

Well for men and women, I would think they would be strong, flexible, good faces, and be very intelligent. If you are intelligent you can unlock everything else there is to life. Everyone is intelligent in their own way, that's why people are so diverse. Beauty comes within more than from the outside. If you have beauty within, it will most definitely show on the outside, where people can see and will think of you as a beautiful person.

Examples of What think beauty means

I think this is beautiful to me because, she is new and she has much to learn. She has done nothing and she will do lots when she grows up. So innocent and cute. Inside her she does not know a thing, she is empty but can be filled easily.

Usually When I think of beauty I think of a beautiful girl. This is just an example this is the actor from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Although her personality does not match her beauty, I only meant the outside. This is the beauty I usually think of , something attractive in some way.
